Rehabilitation, Recidivism, Reform, Recovery, Reentry: Can we move from Rehashing old themes to Reinventing services for people with mental illness in the justice system?
The evidence base for how we address psychiatric disability in the justice system is just as limited by a lack of initiative among mental health professionals as by the constraints of the justice system. We will review the current policy context, evidence for the interventions du jour, and possibly explore areas for “breaking out” into new, fertile terrain.
Jeffrey Draine, MSW, PhD is an associate professor of social work at the University of Pennsylvania. His primary interests are rehabilitation and recovery-oriented services for people with psychiatric disabilities involved in the justice system. His current work is a randomized trial of Critical Time Intervention for people leaving prison and developmental work on people with HIV leaving large urban jails. At Penn, he is affiliated with the School of Social Policy and Practice and the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research in the Department of Psychiatry. He began his career as an activist for homelessness and housing-related causes in Richmond, Virginia.
